Jonathan Hammersley
I am an Assistant Professor of Psychology here at Union College. I am trained in adult clinical psychology and I have worked in areas of clinical psychopharmacology and psychological assessment, but am not a licensed psychologist. I moved here from Indianapolis after doing my internship at Indiana University School of Medicine.
I grew up in Southern Illinois, moved to Indiana for a few years, and returned for graduate school at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (home of the Salukis). To impress me, tell me you know what a Saluki actually is! A teaching philosophy of “Learn it, do it, and teach it” was instilled in me during graduate school and further reinforced at Indiana, where we had to learn new assessments, do them in front of supervisors, and then teach them to other students. I enjoy teaching physiological psychology, research methods, abnormal psychology, behavioral neuroscience, and assessment courses.
I have had the fortune of working within several fairly diverse fields of clinical psychology. I worked for years in an integrative neuroscience lab studying smoking cessation, the effects of nicotine and caffeine, dopamine receptor genotypes, and the interaction of attentional and emotional processing. I also developed computerized programs used to assess attention and emotional distractibility and co-authored several articles and presentations. I also worked as a psychometrist for the SIU Dept. of Rehabilitation, doing assessments for the state of Illinois to determine whether clients should qualify (intellectually, emotionally, or in personality) to receive college training through state disability funds.
